Award-winning filmmaker based in Christchurch, NZ

Andy Johnson is an experienced freelance video creator based in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

After completing a Bachelor of Design degree majoring in Visual Communication from Massey University, Andy embarked on a career starting at Oktobor, a visual effects and animation house in Pōneke Wellington, a subsidiary of Silverscreen Productions. Here he developed his skills in post-production in the fast-paced world of commercial production, working on high end TV advertising and visual effects on the Lord of the Rings films.

Later in London, Andy continued to hone his editing craft as a commercial film assistant editor in Soho, before moving on to the visual effects company Double Negative where he contributed to the post-production of blockbuster films including Pride and Prejudice, Batman Begins and Harry Potter.

After several successful years in the fast-paced world of London’s post-production industry, he decided to transition into freelance filmmaking, taking on projects in London, Amsterdam, Qatar, South Korea and eventually China where he lived for 2.5 years. As a freelance filmmaker based in Shanghai, his portfolio expanded to include a wide array of projects, ranging from commercial campaigns for multinational corporations such as Lamborghini, Johnnie Walker, Adidas and Porsche, to independent short films that won acclaim in film festivals.

Beyond his filmmaking endeavours, Andy takes a keen interest in nurturing the next generation of filmmakers. In 2015 he trained as a teacher, and worked for several years in the secondary and tertiary sectors as an educator, teaching design, photography, filmmaking and animation.

Outside of work, Andy continues to indulge his love for travel and adventure with his partner and two young boys exploring the landscapes of New Zealand.

Clients find Andy easy to work with, efficient and professional, consistently exceeding expectations and producing high-quality work. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with him to discuss your next project.
